The third advance in drones is taking center stage in 2010: the "Gorgon Stare" model of the MQ-9 Reaper, augmenting the Predator & Reaper drones now in use. In all the US Air Force now files 38 drones, up from 6 in 2006 and aiming at 50 in 2011. Going beyond identifying single targets, Gorgon Stare will enable 24/7 pattern-of-life surveillance, initially covering 1.5 square miles, then in 2011 doubling to 3 square miles. Such surveillance can yield vital information about local unit structures, who is commanding, what kinds of actions are underway, etc.
