The author's article is very well-written, and considers as well the likely Obama pick. Ranked first is Solicitor-General Elena Kagan, who is respected by some prominent conservative legal figures. If a woman is not picked, the author's bet is on moderate Democrat Merrick Garland, who sits on the appeals court in the D.C. Circuit and also is highly regarded. Both would easily be confirmed.
Two possible African-American nominees: A-G ERIC HOLDER & MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR DEVAL PATRICK, BOTH NIGHTMARES FROM A CONSERVATIVE VIEWPOINT. KAGAN OR GARLAND WOULD BE BETTER BOTH IN QUALITY AND IN VIEWPOINT.
