Start with the State of Arizona's SB 1070 IMMIGRATION LAW (16 p.), which takes effect July 29. Add in this House hearing video clip of A-G Eric Holder re Arizona SB 1070 (3:44), in which Holder admits that while raising racial profiling concerns over Arizona's law, which the Feds may sue to nullify, He had not even read the law. He based (biased) his comments on fragmentary administration and press report. Here is an explanation of the reasons behind adoption of the law (not timed, est. 5 minutes), from an Arizona official; he cites agitation by leftist Hispanic groups that indoctrinates Latino youths in racial resentment of whites.
Playing the Race Card has the (perhaps intended) effect of killing meaningful two-way dialogue, just as calling liberals "Communist" kills any chance of useful two-way dialogue. Most liberals are not Communist, and most conservatives are not racist. The "R" word for conservatives is as unfairly inflammatory and inaccurate as the "C" word is to liberals.
Underlying much of the issue is overweening ethnic pride. One's ethnicity is an accident of birth; one can admire the achievements of one's fellow ethnics, but it is the achievement that matters, not the ethnicity. Students should be taught not racial self-esteem, but self-esteem derived from achievement.
Bottom Line. Unless ethnic pride is linked to achievement instead of accident of birth, America will be irremediably transformed from the proverbial melting pot to a salad bowl. Strongly self-identified disparate ethnic groups will find little common trans-group societal solidarity. The "United" in United States of America will become the "Warring States" of America.
