The mosque is sponsored by The Cordoba Initiative, a group that states its purpose as advancing Muslim-West relations. Needless to say, some people are very upset with this idea, for reasons that are obvious and well-covered in the article. Put simply, there is reason to believe that the Cordoba group is radical, and not moderate as is publicly portrayed. Among other things it blames the US for 9/11 and sees Muslim terror as a response to Christian & Jewish aggression. It should be noted that the Great Mosque of Cordoba was a symbol of Islamic suzerainty over the Spanish for centuries.
Bottom Line. To assure us of its bona fides, the Cordoba Group should openly, regularly and without qualification condemn Islamic terror. Failing such, the mosque should not be built anywhere near Ground Zero.
