Try this for size as a thought experiment on how the US would handle a hostile flotilla....
AEI foreign policy maven Danielle Pletka posted an entry asking
what we would do if a flotilla made its way toward Guantanamo to deliver aid and comfort to the victims of American aggression, illegal detention or some such. And if that flotilla ignored warnings to turn away and refused to allow U.S. security to board peacefully to examine the contents. And if, once boarded, those on the boats attacked our servicemen. It hasn't happened--yet. But why not?
WHY NOT, INDEED?
It is too much to hope for, needless to say, from an administration whose chief thinks Israel's raid "tragic" but could not call out the jihadists whose machinations set up the Israelis and whose aggression forced the Israelis to defend themselves. Let alone expect restraint from an administration which declines to veto a UN resolution of stunning hypocrisy, aimed at Israel, thinking that in doing so it will propitiate the Turks, who are flying to militant Islam faster as we act weaker. Team Obama is sucking up to the growing gaggle of Islamist activists (who include Turkey's virulently anti-Semitic leader) while Israel is increasingly isolated--partly due to ritualistic, absurd condemnations of Israel by Euro-jackals. A key player in the flotilla was the Muslim Brotherhood, a huge Islamist group that many in the West fantasize is mostly moderate.
Haaretz posted several YouTube Gaza flotilla videos, reporting that the IDF's videos topped al-Jazeera's in global viewership, but that the al-Jazeera video was posted first. Al-Jazeera's live post-raid clip (1:28) is spectacularly mendacious, claiming that all 600 aboard ship were civilians, when 40 were Turkish jihadists.
Meanwhile, author Yossi Klein Halevi writes that Israelis wonder if the world has lost its collective mind. He is not wrong to so wonder.
Charles Krauthammer, who seems to age like proverbial fine wine, neatly encapsulates the growing assault on Israel during the tenure of The One at 1600 Penn. He starts with the commendably frank explanation of the flotilla's organizer, one Greta Berlin, as to why Israel's offer to inspect cargo was refused by Ms. Berlin's unruly charges:
Why was the offer refused? Because, as organizer Greta Berlin admitted, the flotilla was not about humanitarian relief but about breaking the blockade, i.e., ending Israel's inspection regime, which would mean unlimited shipping into Gaza and thus the unlimited arming of Hamas.
CK then explains how the ring is closing on Israel. After detailing how Israel is being denied forward defense (fight them away from home), active defense (pre-emption) and passive defense (blockade)--the US does 1 & 2 in Afghanistan & Pakistan today, & did 3 in 1962 with Cuba--CK writes:
But, if none of these is permissible, what's left?
Ah, but that's the point. It's the point understood by the blockade-busting flotilla of useful idiots and terror sympathizers, by the Turkish front organization that funded it, by the automatic anti-Israel Third World chorus at the United Nations, and by the supine Europeans who've had quite enough of the Jewish problem.
What's left? Nothing. The whole point of this relentless international campaign is to deprive Israel of any legitimate form of self-defense. Why, just last week, the Obama administration joined the jackals, and reversed four decades of U.S. practice, by signing onto a consensus document that singles out Israel's possession of nuclear weapons -- thus de-legitimizing Israel's very last line of defense: deterrence.
Denied even deterrence, what is next? CK's chilling conclusion:
The world is tired of these troublesome Jews, 6 million -- that number again -- hard by the Mediterranean, refusing every invitation to national suicide. For which they are relentlessly demonized, ghettoized and constrained from defending themselves, even as the more committed anti-Zionists -- Iranian in particular -- openly prepare a more final solution.
Yes, that means genocide. Do our President and other domestic critics of Israel desire this? Surely not. Do they facilitate this? Sadly so. Thought experiment: Israel signs a peace accord with the Palestinians, and rocket attacks resume--on the pretext of mistreatment of Palestinians living inside Israel, who are treated better there than in Palestinian and other Arab territories. What would President Obama do? My guess: Go to the UN and join the debate over how, if at all, Israel can defend itself.
Bottom Line. It would be almost worth organizing such a flotilla to expose the rank hypocrisy of the administration as to what it demands of Israel. Another would be forbearance under fire from thousands of rockets, a wave of suicide bombers, is another...you get the idea. Barack Obama, alas, does not. Thus, increasingly, Israel stands alone, as the jackals circle the campfire.
