How many fantasies can a President embrace?....
Russian "Reset?" First, we had the fantasy "reset" with Russia, an utterly puerile concept based upon a presumably achievable mutual affection with leaders among the most unsentimental on Earth. So we signed New START, a treaty so friendly to Russia that it enables them to build and deploy a new generation of modern missiles, whilst we retire much of our own arsenal. In pursuit of which we throw two close allies who genuinely harbor warm feelings toward us, Czech Republic & Poland, to the wolves, striking a missile defense deal behind their backs with Moscow, and notifying them at five minutes to midnight. We look the other way as Mother Russia seeks to draw back into her suffocating embrace captive nations that escaped twenty years ago. So when Hillary criticizes the farcical Russian election--one so bad that even Mikhhail Gorbachev has called for a re-run, what does Vladimir Putin do? He slams Hillary for deliberately triggering protests, a charge utterly false & malicious. So much for the pseudo-warmth of reset.
Israel's Best Pal? And while "O" cozies up to Moscow, he comes down like a ton of bricks on ... Israel. He shoves Israel into an unprecedented moratorium on "settlement" building. He breaks his promise that the moratorium would expire after ten months. He defines the lines of demarcation pre-1967 as "borders"--they are in fact ceasefire lines, as the Arabs then refused to recognize the Jewish state (Syria & the Palestinians still do). He allows the Palestinians to defy the US & go to the UN seeking a General Assembly endorsement of statehood, then tries anew to shove Israel into the Oslo "peace process" destroyed by the Palestinians by the very act of going to the UN & thus bypassing the direct negotiations that are the heart of Oslo and what Israel bargained for. His minions (most recently, Hillary & SecDef Leon Panetta) blame Israel for the impasse despite an unbroken record of Palestinian intransigence. As for Obama himself, in vast self-regard mode he recently told Jewish supporters: "I try not to pat myself too much on the back, but this administration has done more for the security of the state of Israel than any previous administration.”
And as Iran marches towards nuclear weapon capability Obama leans on Israel NOT to take any action, despite sanctions to date being manifestly inadequate to stop Iran's quest--Obama refuses to allow sanctions on Iran's central bank, though they might actually work; for blocking the move, Obama has teed off a top Democrat on the Hill (Howard Berman, ranking minority member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee). Obama waffles on Iran despite the fact that Iran is at war with us, having aided bin Laden's al-Qaeda minions in carrying out the 1998 Embassy bombings in Africa--confirmed by specific judicial factual findings in a Nov. 28 federal court ruling, in Owens v. Sudan. And having bashed Israel, Obama's SecDef reassures Iran that Team Obama considers the military option highly dubious--causing even the Washington Post editors to openly cringe. Elliott Abrams sees Obama as unwilling to help the Syrian opposition overthrow Iranian ally Bashar al-Assad. The indefatigable Barry Rubin lists 27 failings of Obama's Mideast policy, all to the detriment of America's closest Mideast ally, Israel. Playwritght David Mamet, more philosophical, sees Obama's tossing Israel to the wolves like Britain & France throwing Czechoslovakia to Hitler, the triumph of pagan sacrifice over Western reason. As for SecState Hillary, she is exploring ways to curb speech critical of Islam.
"Soak the Rich" Economics. Charles Krauthammer acidly catalogues the serial snake-oil remedies that Obama has embraced: a phony stimulus rewarding political friends; Green energy boondoggles--a Bush - Obama cellulosic ethanol boondoggle ordering government purchase of 250 million tons in 2011 fell victim to the actual production figure, 6.6 million; throwing tons of money at education despite zero benefits from massive spending hikes over the past forty years, while ignoring hydrocarbon energy sources that could liberate the US from unfriendly oil & gas suppliers; job-killing regulations by the bushel; rejection of bipartisan reform of the tax code by trading lower rates for fewer loopholes; taxing the "rich" to raise what would be a piddling revenue number, whilst ignoring how entitlement spending is swallowing up the federal budget, at the expense of everything else. On top of all this, Obama peddles historical snake-oil about prior GOP administration tax & regulatory policies. Mark Steyn dissects Obama's delusions about America's economy, in which "O" says our problem is "you're on yor own" economics--this in a country with entitlement programs the 800-lb. gorilla of the federal budget, $1 trillion in unpaid student loans, a housing market wrecked by the Fannie/Freddie duopoly, and government having wormed its way into virtually every aspect of modern life; Steyn notes that the welfare state has run out of people to stick it to, and the bill has at least come due. And Obama looks to Europe's socio-economic model, even as Europhilia explodes under the pressures of the current Euro-crisis.
Presuming Presidents Past. The tally to date is five: Abe Lincoln, his Illinois predecessor whom he presumed to become during his campaign; FDR, whose baleful "soak-the-rich" economic nostrums and massive federal spending spree "O" embraced from the start of his term, with an economy now in worse shape than he inherited; Ronald Reagan, whose tax-cutting, regulation-reducing crusade against Big Government was the antithesis of Obama's ideas; Harry Truman, who ran against a "do-nothing" Republican Congress, whilst Obama ignores a Democratic Senate that has not passed a budget in over 950 days, though required by law to do so; and now, Teddy Roosevelt, whose populist crusade against "malefactors of great wealth" came in a vastly different society than America today.
Bottom Line. So where have Obama's fantasies left us? Facing a Russia determined to regain its position as a world superpower, harshly opposed to much of what America seeks to do. Relations with Israel at an all-time low, without getting the Palestinians to concede even an iota of their maximalist "no Jewish state" agenda, while our allies in the Arab world beg us to focus on Iran. An economy still in the ditch, with: (a) a shrinking labor force participation rate--unemployment would be 11 percent, not 8.6 percent, were the labor force the same size it was when Obama took office; (b) an investment strike, as employers wait to see if a new administration will relieve them of burdensome regulation--above all, ObamaCare: (c) an energy policy in ruins, holding up a true "shovel-ready" oil & gas pipeline, thus snubbing close ally Canada in the act & sacrificing job-creating reality to Green energy fantasy. In sum, "O" claims to channel five prior Presidents, everyone of whom was a giant, when in fact Obama is a Presidential pygmy.
Our President lives, it seems, in a parallel universe. We will see come November 2012 if he can entice enough voters with him over there to give "The One" four more years.
