How Obama is changing America....
If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves; nor can they be safe with them without information. Where the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe.

TJ gives us 3 gems in one compact paragraph: (1) ignorant voters cannot preserve a free republic; (2) powerful government imperils liberty & property of its subjects; (3) a free press & literate public are essential to limit government's reach.
Lincoln's Reassurance. Famously quipped Honest Abe: "You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time; but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."
Obama's Answers. To Thomas: Bring ignorant voters to the polls, with whatever inducements are needed. Use government power to divide people into targetable groups; propitiate those who support you & bully those who do not. Rely on a fawning mainstream media press to propagandize on behalf of the administration. To Abe: One need only fool enough of the people enough of the time.
Bottom Line. Be afraid for the future of a free, prosperous American republic. Be VERY afraid.
