Rep. Duckworth (D-IL) nails a fraudster (8:00) ....
Rep. Tammy Duckworth paid a terrible price for serving her country in Iraq. Her Blackhawk helicopter was hit by an RPG. She survived, but lost both legs & the use of her right arm, which may in the future also have to be amputated. She has a 20 percent disability rating for her arm alone. (She did not offer her total disability number.)
The stomach-turning contractor whom she reamed out Wednesday had just told her that he felt he had earned a 30 percent disability rating for a high school injury: he broke an ankle playing football. This, 27 years later, he used to claim disability as a veteran and gain preferential federal contracting treatment. Yet the injury did not prevent him from playing college football.
The contractor conspired with an IRS employee--who took the Fifth at the same hearing--to win $500 million worth of government business, ostensibly for what he termed his "great service" to "my country."
Most notable in the clip is Duckworth noting that every fraudulent or inflated disability claim pushes genuinely disabled veterans further back in line. Veterans wait an average of 237 days for an initial determination of disability, Duckworth noted.
Watch the full clip for a memorable lesson in how disability benefits can be gamed.
Bottom Line. This disgusting episode is part of what one expects with a leviathan government that cannot investigate every spurious claim. Advocates of radically expanding the federal establishment, which President Obama aims to do, might ponder this.
