2016 tees up what kind of A-G shd next prez want?
Begin with this: not the race-obsessed, massively corrupt political hack attorney-general that Eric Holder proved to be.
A Democrat should appoint a clone of Jimmy Carter's finest domestic appointee, the late Judge Griffin Bell. Appointed in 1961 by President Kennedy, Bell served 14 years on the Fifth Circuit as a federal appeals judge. He presided as A-G over the shrinking of the geographically immense Fifth Circuit into a smaller Fifth & a new Eleventh Circuit. He was an architect of the 1978 Foreign Intelligence & Surveillance Act, which though amended by the post-9/11/2001 USA Patriot Act remains on the books. As A-G from 1976-1979 he became the first--and remains the only--A-G to publish each days his third-party contacts.
A Republican should appoint a clone of Bush 43's last A-G, Judge Michael Mukasey. For 18 years a federal judge in the southern district of New York, the last 6 Mukasey was chief justice; he was appointed by President Reagan. He served as an assistant district attorney for four years under Rudy Giuliani, in the Southern District. And he presided over the prosecution & conviction of the World Trade Center 1993 bombers.
Both had in common: absolute integrity, essential for the number one enforcer of America's federal laws; high intelligence; supreme professional accomplishment--Bell as a federal appellate judge & Mukasey as a stellar federal trial judge; excellent communication skills that enabled them to explain legal issues in terms accessible to lay voters.
Oh, contra what President Obama said of his chief agent of undermining rule of law in America, Holder was, writes Commentary Blog's Peter Wehner, no Robert F. Kennedy:
This cynicism made it all the more jarring when both Obama and Holder attempted to don the mantle of Robert F. Kennedy through repeated appeals to his legacy in yesterday’s statements. In May 1961, only a few months after the University of Georgia campus exploded with violence in response to a court’s desegregation order, Bobby Kennedy spoke to the university’s law students about Brown v. Board of Education. “I happen to believe that the 1954 decision was right,” he said. “But my belief does not matter. It is now the law. Some of you may believe the decision was wrong. That does not matter. It is the law. And we both respect the law. By facing this problem honorably you have shown to all the world that we Americans are moving forward together, solving this problem under the rule of law.”
PW noted that Holder has obstructed justice--investigations--by withholding documents, to the point of exasperating federal judges. Further, he holds the dubious distinction of being the only sitting Cabinet official--mind you, not simply the only A-G--to be cited formally for contempt of Congress.
Dan Henninger at WSJ recently pinpointed the vast damage Holder/Obama have done to constitutional law & the separation of powers among the three branches of government.
Bottom Line. In a nation supposed to be one governed by laws impartially administered, it is essential that a high-caliber attorney-general be appointed. In other words, the next president should appoint someone who is the polar opposite of Eric Holder, America's worst A-G ever.
